The Journey to Sobriety (Desire)

Proverbs 23:1 & 2 – When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

For our consideration, let’s think of the ruler as the desire in us.  Let’s call the ruler, “Desire”. Desire is one of the first emotions that will direct us into good action. On the contrary, it is also desire that motivates us to pursue that which is not to our advantage.

In Matthew 12:34b Jesus’ words “…for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”

Deliverance from an overdose of emotion is a blend of our own awareness, and at the same time a surrender of heart, acknowledging that our willpower cannot deliver us.

I Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Casting something is an action.  A synonym would be “throwing”. To throw we need to make a decision. Give a child in a highchair, a child who still can’t speak, an item they don’t want. They throw it! It is an expression, a desire for something other than what was offered.

May we be like a child. Even when we are linguistically challenged, when we can’t find words, but we know what’s offered to us is not what we want, let’s cast it to Jesus. We don’t need to attach a note.  We don’t need to understand our desire, or, for that matter, lack of desire.

A little child shall lead them.

If your ruler, Desire, is before you, you find yourself with your blood pressure rising, you’re impatient.  Something needs to give! Now! Cast those extra doses of desire, the ones that make your mind giddy, to Jesus. Throw them off your high chair.

Good luck and Blessings till next time.
